Jackson Township has provided free trash collection to residents for many years. This service is not required to be provided to township residents and many townships have opted not to offer trash collection. The township trustees feel that this is a valuable service that they would like to continue to offer. However, over the last five years the cost of this trash collection has more than doubled. One reason for the increase in costs are higher rates at the landfill and for the roll off service. These costs are something that we don’t have any control over. The second reason is an increase in the volume of trash that we are collecting. In the past, we only needed one roll off per collection and now we almost always need two. The number of households in the township has not increased in the last five years. In order to control the costs and to be able to continue to provide this service, the trustees are implementing the following rules:
1) NO early dumping. Trash drop off is 12p-530p only.
2) Before dumping their trash, all residents are required to write their name and address in the book by the building in front of the recycling bins.
3) This service is only for trash generated by Jackson Township residents. It is not for commercial trash or trash generated by friends or relatives that live outside the township.
4) All items that can be recycled are not to be dumped into the trash roll off. There is no extra cost to the township for the recycling service. However, the trash in the roll off is entirely the cost of the township.
5) The volume of trash per resident per collection will be limited to 1 cubic yard. A cubic yard is a 3-foot x 3-foot x 3-foot cube. This is approximately the size of four 55-gallon barrels.
6) No reclining chairs, couches or mattresses will be accepted. The trustees are considering offering a special semi-annual collection for these larger items.
7) The township personnel and backhoe are available for anyone needing assistance in putting their trash in the roll off. To ensure everyone’s safety, please stay outside of the cones. The backhoe will come to the edge of the cones to collect your trash if you need assistance.
